Responsible gambling
Gambling is a form of entertainment with a price attached. Over any meaningful period the house edge means the expected outcome is a loss — that is the design of the product, not bad luck. Everything below assumes you already know that and want to keep the cost where you decided it should be.
The controls that work
- Deposit limit
- The single most effective tool. Set daily, weekly or monthly, and increases take effect only after a cooling-off delay — which is exactly the point.
- Loss limit
- Caps net losses over a period rather than money in. Better than a deposit limit if you redeposit winnings.
- Session reminders
- A pop-up telling you how long you have been playing. Sounds trivial; it interrupts the state in which time disappears.
- Time-out
- A short cooling-off period, typically a day to several weeks. Use it the moment a session stops feeling like a choice.
- Self-exclusion
- Blocks the account for a long fixed period and cannot be reversed early. That irreversibility is the feature.
Set these while the account is empty and you are calm. Nobody sets a limit well in the middle of chasing a loss.
Signs worth taking seriously
Betting more than you planned; gambling to recover losses; borrowing to play, including via a credit card; hiding the extent of it; missing work, sleep or commitments; needing bigger stakes to feel the same thing; feeling anxious or irritable when you cannot play. One of these is worth noticing. Several together is worth acting on today rather than after the next session.
Where to get free, confidential help
- GamCare and the National Gambling Helpline — free, confidential support in the UK, available around the clock.
- Gambling Help Online — Australian counselling and chat support.
- GamblersAnonymous — peer support groups in most countries, online and in person.
- GamStop (UK) and BetStop (Australia) — national self-exclusion registers that block licensed operators at once, independently of any single casino's settings.
- Your national health service or a GP — gambling harm is treated, and treatment works.
Two blocks worth setting up regardless: gambling transaction blocking in your banking app, offered by most major banks, and site-blocking software on the devices you use. Both add friction at the moment it helps most.
Nobody under 18 may hold a gambling account. If children use your devices, device-level blocking is not optional.
